Licenciado (Graduate) in Chemistry from UPV/EHU, and in Basque Philology from the University of Deusto. PhD in Linguistics (2002) from the University of Southern California (USC). Between 2011 and 2021, he was Associate Professor at the department of Linguistics and Basque Studies, School of Letters, UPV/EHU (Vitoria-Gasteiz). Currently, from september 2021 onwards, he is Associate Professor at the department of Basque Language and Communication, School of Science and Technology, UPV/EHU (Campus of Leioa). His research-work has been recognized for three six-year periods.

He was visiting professor at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) dpt. of Linguistics (2002), and at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) dpt. of Spanish (2017). He was also visiting scholar at the UCSB dpt. of Linguistics in 2015 and 2016.

He is the author of 21 scientific articles (published in journals such as Linguistics, Studies in Language, Folia Linguistica, Folia Linguistica Historica, Bulletin of Hispanic Studies), one book (The grammaticalization of present and past in Basque), and 8 book chapters. His research areas are: Typology, functional (usage-based) linguistics, historical linguistics; Basque grammar (in synchrony and diachrony), Basque texts, historical dialectology of Basque. And his research topics are: Ergativity, case-marking alignment, verb morphology, tense-aspect-mood, parts of speech, relative clauses, word order.
