Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

The course "Motivation and Emotion" is a basic subject belonging to the area of knowledge of Basic Psychology, located in the Department of Basic Psychological Processes and their Development at the University of the Basque Country. "Motivation and Emotion" is taught in the second term of the first year of the Degree in Psychology. It consists of 6 credits, and has a theoretical-practical nature (3.4 theoretical credits and 2.6 applied credits). Since one ECTS credit involves 25 hours of student work, this course entails a total of 150 hours of work: 60 hours of in-person work and 90 hours of non-contact work.

Motivation and emotion are two basic processes involved in any human behavior, which are closely related to each other and significantly linked to other processes. Therefore, understanding them is fundamental for comprehending human behavior, as well as other psychological processes.

This course provides students with a scientific and basic education on the defining characteristics of motivation and emotion, the different theories that attempt to explain their functioning, their relationship with other processes, different types of motivation and emotions, as well as a series of practical implications of both processes.

The teaching methodology to be used includes lectures and practical classes. The master classes will consist of the explanation, analysis and joint reflection on the different theoretical contents of the programme. Students will be provided with the material used in class (power point presentations) to follow the theoretical classes. In the practical classes, students will carry out different activities related to the subject. Classroom practices will be guided by the teacher. In the workshops, however, different activities will be carried out in which students will work autonomously, without the supervision of the teacher being necessary. On the other hand, in the seminars, students will reflect on and discuss the readings they have previously done. Finally, in the computer exercises, students will be able to put into practice different exercises aimed at emotional regulation through software.

The evaluation system of the subject includes two modes:

Modality A) Mixed evaluation system: Final assessment (60% through a multiple-choice exam to evaluate the theoretical part) and Continuous assessment (40% through the different practical modalities). The multiple-choice multiple-choice exam, with 4 alternative answers, in which each error is penalised according to the formula Correct-(Errors/N-1) (N = number of answer options). As mentioned above, the exam accounts for 60% of the final mark. Regarding the continuous assessment, in general, in the different sessions, students will work both in groups and individually. This part will account for 40% of the final mark.

Overall, continuous assessment accounts for 40% of the final mark.

Insofar as the aim is to encourage the development of competences, students' active participation will be valued. Students must pass both the theoretical part (the multiple-choice exam) and the practical part in order to pass the course. In the event that a student does not pass the continuous assessment, he/she will have to sit the equivalent exam of modality B (detailed below).

Modality B) Final assessment: Through a multiple-choice exam to assess the theoretical part (60%) and through an exam consisting of several questions/exercises on the different practical modalities. The first part of the exam (multiple-choice test, as in mode A) represents, as mentioned above, 60% of the final mark. This part must be passed in order to pass the course. The second part of the exam consists of several open questions/exercises on the different practical modalities. It accounts for 40% of the mark and must be passed in order to pass the course.

IN THIS COURSE, FAILURE TO SIT THE MULTIPLE-CHOICE EXAM WILL BE SUFFICIENT TO WAIVE THE EXAM.
